Regular Services

Sundays

The primary day of worship for Orthodox Christians is Sunday, the day of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection. Also known as “the Lord’s Day,” it has been a day of worship for Christians since the time of the Apostles (Acts 20:7). On this day we celebrate the Divine Liturgy, the Orthodox eucharistic (communion) service, which includes scripture readings and preaching.

The Divine Liturgy tends to be around 1½ hours in length. In some churches it is preceded by Matins, the morning prayer service of Psalms and hymns celebrating the Resurrection.

Regular Mid-Week Services

Below are the regularly-scheduled mid-week services at different churches. Churches may have other mid-week services, but not necessarily on the same day each week. See the Special Events page for additional mid-week services.

Saturdays

Saturday evening is a time of preparation for the next morning’s Sunday worship. The evening worship service is quiet and contemplative, with the reading of Psalms and the singing of hymns focusing on the Resurrection. Many new visitors make this their first visit to an Orthodox Church.

The service of Vespers is around 45 minutes in length. The Vigil service (which combines the evening Vespers service and the morning Matins service) tends to be around 2 hours in length.
